In 2005 Dubai Municipality took initiative to decorate and restore the Bastakiya. Comfortably standing between the Dubai Creek and Bur Dubai, the neighborhood is a mini maze of art galleries, museums, cafes, and buildings. Al Bastakiya is owner of old heritage of Dubai which reminds of dates farmers and fishermen. Al Bastakiya the old Dubai have Sikka Art Fair, from art galleries to quirky cafes.
The Al Fahidi Neighborhood have a lot of activities to do for visitors. Some of the places to visit in Al Bastakiya is as follow:
1. Mawaheb Art Gallery
This is a Dubai Based art studio for adults with special needs and is from beautiful people. This is also known as “the determined ones” following a directive by His Highness Sheikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. Meaning 'talent' in Arabic, Mawaheb is an art studio for the determined ones in the age of 16 years and above.
The studio is located in the culturally rich Al Fahidi Historical Neighborhood (previously known as Al Bastakiya). Mawaheb provides an opportunity to develop life skills through art, while demonstrating that everyone can be creative in their own unique way.
2. Arabian Tea House Cafe
If you want to eat traditional food of Arabic People Then Arabian tea house café is one of the place you can enjoy at most. This cafe was designed to take people back in life of old Arabic people of Dubai. You can eat the hummus, falafel, and shawarmas and of course, some Moroccan Tea.
3. Sheikh Mohammed Center for Cultural Understanding (SMCCU)
SMCCU is a non-profit organization located in Al Bastakiya. The purpose of establishing this institute was to give opportunity of people of Dubai to understand and learn different cultures of Dubai. The slogan of institute is “Open Doors. Open Mind. The SMCCU institute make every effort to remove barriers between people of different nationalities and raise awareness of the local culture, customs and religion of the United Arab Emirates.
4. Coffee Museum
In the Main Hub of Al Fahidi Bur Dubai, this amazing museum is located. Dubai allocated a full museum to coffee which is an effort unique in its nature. The coffee museum consist of two floors. The ground floor consist of a shop where coffee lovers can buy of their choice. Different roasting and brewing style are demonstrated live on this floor.On the second floor the literature related to coffee is available in forms of books. Visitors and read the books and enjoy the information. Visitors can also enjoy the cup of coffee at the lounge.
5. MAKE Art Cafe
MAKE Art Cafe, is the flagship sub-brand of MAKE Business hub. This art café is opened in November 2015, the MAKE Art Café runs its operations from the courtyard of a charming heritage villa in one of the most attractive heritage areas in the UAE. The cafe is providing guests with an ideal serene space for quiet work, refreshing drinks and food or just to sit and read.
6. Al Bastakiya, Al Fahidi Dress code:
There is no specific dress code for Al Bastakiya, Al Fahidi Dubai. Visitors must wear modestly and as per the basic culture of Dubai. Covering full face or Abaya is not requirement in Dubai, but your body must not be naked. It's a good idea not to show cleavage or thighs. Wearing Jeans or trousers with T shirt is ok.
