Neighbor to Maria Madre is María Magdalena and it is second in area which is thirty two square miles, María Cleofas, approximately 10 miles to the southeast, totals only 9 square miles (23 square km). A fourth island, tiny San Juanito, is also included in the group. The island have scarcity of water and because of that all of smaller three islands are uninhabited. The island have around 1100 free citizens and around eight thousands prisoners.
There is a light house on Maria Madre and a Govt. operated penal colony. The lighthouse is two hundred feet tall and produce two white flashes every ten seconds. The lighthouse gallery is painted white while strip of tower is painted red and white. The Marías are of some economic value for their guano and salt deposits, maguey, and lumber. In 2010 Islas Maira is declared as Biosphere Reserve includes ecosystems with a great wealth of species of biological, economic, scientific and cultural relevance.
UNESCO website declares Fifty-four species of land and marine fauna are protected under some risk category and of these, 19 are endemic. Regarding the flora, 11 endemic or restricted distribution taxa have been recorded, together with six species (one endemic) that are included in a risk category according to NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2001. Furthermore, the Reserve is an important refuge, nesting and feeding site for large colonies of sea birds.
Transportation to Isla Maria Madre:
The Mexican Navy has launched a new, Astimar-built, logistic support ship, the ARM Isla María Madre (BAL-11). This ship fifty three meter is size will transport the food and prisoners on island of Maria Madre. On May 27 2016 this ship was launched from the port of Guaymas. This ship is capable to carry hundred and forty five people along with the crew of seventeen people at the speed of 22 knots per miles.
Temperature on Isla Maria Madre:
The temperature of island mean remain between 29 and 32 degrees Celsius throughout the year. In April, May and June some time temperature cross the limit of thirty five degree Celsius. In December Jan and Feb the temperature remain under twenty five degrees. Sometime the temperature may drop under twenty degree Celsius. Most of the time weather remain dry but July, August and September may receive the rain up to 10mm. The average wind speed remain between twelve and nineteen km/hour.
Isla Maria Madre Prison:
Islas Maria Prison were built in 1905 and it has been estimated that more than twenty nine thousand prisoners were remain there in different time. When the prisons in Mexico go over crowded then Govt. of Mexico transfer the prisoners to this island. Recently in 2004 around twenty five hundred prisoners were transferred. This is free prison with protection of water around. Still some cases of escape have been reported during different time. Most of time it happened because of bribes.
